Cactus Communications (CACTUS), a science communications and technology company, participated in the 9th International Congress on Peer Review and Scientific Publication from September 8 to September 10, 2022. The event is organized every four years by JAMA and the JAMA Network, the British Medical Journal (BMJ), and the Meta-Research Innovation Center at Stanford (METRICS). The goal is to present academic research and studies about the different aspects of the publication process. Donald Samulack, Head of Global Stakeholder Engagement, and Jayashree Rajagopalan, Community Lead at CACTUS and Co-Chair of Peer Review Week 2022, attended the event in Chicago. They participated in discussions as well as showcased how CACTUS’ solutions can help publishers and institutions achieve their goals.
Abhishek Goel, CEO, and Co-founder, CACTUS, said, “It is really exciting for CACTUS to be part of this prestigious meeting where stakeholders in the scholarly publishing world share meta research on specific aspects of publishing to create a foundation for introducing efficiencies in the ecosystem. These discussions will give us the background we need – to think about how we can strengthen the CACTUS suite of solutions to help publishers, institutions, and associations reach their dissemination and outreach goals.”
At the conference, CACTUS was able to showcase two primary offerings, Paperpal Preflight – an AI-powered language and technical compliance check tool, and Impact Science, a CACTUS brand that specializes in science communication strategy and tactics. Duncan MacRae, Director, Editorial Strategy and Publishing Policy, Wolters Kluwer, presented a co-authored poster with CACTUS on the rejection rates observed with Paperpal Preflight versus regular manuscript submissions in a multidisciplinary medical journal.
Donald Samulack, Head of Global Stakeholder Engagement, who represented CACTUS in this event, said, “Global events like these enable us to connect with our peers and get deeper insights into the challenges and changing needs of both parties – the publishers, who work behind the scenes to publish research, and the academic community, which is the source of critical research. Conversations around technology were rife this year as AI-powered tools are increasingly being explored and embraced by publishers and researchers. With advances in AI, researchers now have numerous tech aids to assist them in streamlining their publication journey.”
During the three-day hybrid meeting which was attended by over 500 participants from 37 countries, attendees presented and debated original research on specific aspects of the publishing process. The topics presented included research integrity, publication ethics, emerging threats such as paper mills, diversity and inclusion in publishing, trends and challenges in peer review, pandemic science, rise of preprints, social media, clinical trial reporting, research culture, and more.
